Have Bad Habits Contributed To Bad Skin? Let’s Talk About It

Although people visit our professional Bay Area skin care clinic due to the typical signs of aging, there are other reasons someone’s skin isn’t as resilient as it used to be. Many of these reasons are actually under a person’s own control. Our chosen behaviors and habits can impact how we look and feel.a picture of a person before and after of good and bad skin

Take what people eat, for example. If a person’s diet lacks important vitamins and nutrients, their skin will show it. A lack of specific vitamins like C and E can make the skin appear dull and loose.

Here’s a quick list of foods that are good for healthy skin:
Fatty Fish – Salmon, herring, and Mackerel are complete with omega-3 fatty acids for youthful, hydrated skin.

Sweet Potatoes contain beta–carotene, which converts to Vitamin A. Vitamin A (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamin-a-benefits) can protect against sun damage and support fresh, healthy skin among other benefits.

Bell Peppers Are rich in Vitamin C, which promotes collagen production and supports firm skin.
Tomatoes – have lycopene, which provides antioxidants also to help protect against sun damage
Broccoli – Contains Vitamine A, C, lutein and zinc. These are all great sources that protect against skin damage.
Avocados are high in Vitamin E, C, and healthy fats. We are lucky to have an abundance of this superfood in our state!
When your mother told you to eat your fresh fruits and vegetables, that was life-long advice! And if you don’t like several of the foods on this list, add a few squares of dark chocolate to your dessert to help improve the skin texture and hydration.

Smoking is also a notoriously bad habit for one’s health and skin. Smoking actually acerates the aging process, turning skin sallow and dry. In California, we are very susceptible to overexposure to the sun, which causes several types of skin ailments, including dryness, wrinkles, moles, sunspots, and discoloration. The sun’s UV rays are notorious for degrading a person’s skin. Yet we need vitamin D for our mood regulation, bone health, and immune system. Proper use of sunscreen and time management in the sunshine can help alleviate these issues.

Finally, poor skin care can also cause long-term damage. Low-grade, harsh facial cleansers and lotions can contribute to lower elasticity and dryness.
